Cap Metro Launches More Frequent Service, New Round Rock Routes

Capital Metro has begun new bus service to Round Rock, and will increase the frequency of its existing MetroRapid lines.

The three new Round Rock bus routes started on August 21 and will bring Round Rock travelers to stops between Austin Community College’s Round Rock campus and Howard Station with stops in between; between St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center and Dell’s Round Rock campus with stops in between; and from the Tech Ridge Park & Ride to the Round Rock Transit Center with limited stops.

A fourth route, the Howard Express, will travel from the Round Rock Transit Center to the Park & Ride at New Life Church and then continue onto its Austin service, traveling on the MoPac managed lanes into downtown. That service won’t start until the MoPac Express lanes are fully open to traffic. That’s anticipated to happen this fall.

The improvements to the MetroRapid service come out of the Connections 2025 Transit Plan. Frequency increases, which will begin on Aug. 20, mean that both Routes 801 and 803 will run every 10 minutes between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays and every 15 minutes from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the weekend. Late-night service will operate until 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, giving riders a safer and cheaper transportation alternative when going out after dark.

The new bus service and more frequent routes could mean more options for commuters who want to opt out of the region’s growing traffic jams. Employers cite traffic congestion as a challenge to retention and hiring, and the Austin Chamber of Commerce has said that it will take a combination of new infrastructure and more commuters using alternative transportation to improve the region’s mobility.
