Texas Children’s Hospital Expanding into Austin with Clinics

Austin’s had some big healthcare headlines lately with the opening of the new Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas, and now there’s more healthcare news on the way, albeit a pint-size variety.

Houston-based Texas Children’s Hospital has announced plans to expand into Austin, starting in 2018. Texas Children’s has said it will start with a South Austin pediatric urgent care clinic that is scheduled to open in the spring of 2018.

More is planned for the next five years: three additional pediatric urgent care clinics, 18 primary care pediatric practices, three pediatric specialty care locations, and two maternal-fetal medicine practices.

As to whether or not Texas Children’s may follow that expansion with a hospital in Austin is unclear, but it’s at least been hinted at. Dr. Mark Kline, physician-in-chief for Texas Children’s, told the Houston Chronicle that the healthcare provider’s leaders might be open to the possibility of building a Texas Children’s hospital in Austin eventually. There are no current plans to do so, however, and Kline said that a hospital would only be considered after Texas Children’s has “implemented this five-year plan.”

Austin is currently home toDell Children’s Medical Center, a Level 1 pediatric trauma center, and St. David’s Children’s Hospital, which is housed within St. David’s North Austin Medical Center.

“We are being thoughtful in our approach to the services we plan to bring to the Austin community,” said Michelle Riley-Brown, executive vice president at Texas Children’s. “Our goal is to elevate the level of care provided to children and women throughout the state by supplementing and adding value to the great health care options already available to Austin-area families.”
