New Development Announced for ACC Highland (RENDERING)
More construction is on tap for the Highland Mall site: two new apartment buildings and more retail space were recently announced for the property.
The land, located in Central Austin along Airport Boulevard, is owned by Austin Community College and has been undergoing redevelopment for the last several years. The two new buildings, which will include 390 residential units and 25,000 square feet of retail space, will join another mixed-use project under construction.
That building, Elan Parkside, is nearing completion and will include 300 apartments and 5,000 square feet of retail.
RedLeaf Properties is overseeing the mall’s redevelopment, and is working with Greystar Real Estate Partners on both apartment projects.
“All of us at Greystar are proud to be a part of this groundbreaking development,” Greystar managing director Derek Brown told the Austin American-Statesman. “The Highland redevelopment has become one of the most-anticipated real estate projects in Central Texas and a stellar example of a successful public-private partnership that results in a more thoughtful, more vital and more popular project for everyone involved.”
Together, the three buildings will surround an open, green space that will be the main entrance to the Highland property off of Airport Blvd.
The Highland Mall began losing major anchors after the recession hit in 2008. Austin Community College (ACC) acquired the Highland Mall parcels between 2010 and 2011 with plans to transform the dying mall into a vibrant flagship campus surrounded by mixed-use development. The nearly 40 acres of existing parking lots are transforming into residential, retail, hospitality, office, and parkland.
Phase I of the ACC Highland campus opened to students in the fall of 2014. Construction on Phase II, a “regional workforce innovation center” started in 2016. That $152.8-Million project is scheduled to be completed in 2019.
