ABIA Construction Update – May 2017

Austin keeps growing, and that means the Austin Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) has to keep growing as well. There are several projects planned and under construction at the airport to help keep up with the increasing passenger traffic. Here’s a look at a few of the projects currently underway:

The 9-gate, 175,000 square foot terminal expansion is ongoing, with two tower cranes visible above the eastern portion of the existing terminal. In addition, an expansion to the apron pavement is also underway to accommodate the increased aircraft size and traffic.

Together, these improvements will accommodate approximately 4 million additional passengers per year (a 27% increase), according to ABIA. Hensel Phelps is the general contractor and Gensler designed the terminal expansion.

Meanwhile, a new 6-level parking garage with 6,000 spaces is also construction, taking the place of the former Parking Lot A. The project will also include an administration building and improvements to the entry and exit plazas, and signage. Austin Commercial is building the project, with PGAL providing architectural services.

Directly across Highway 71 at Presidential Boulevard, another airport parking facility just held its grand opening. Bark & Zoom is a combined parking facility and pet resort (complete with a bone-shaped dog pool!). The pet resort is managed by the Taurus Academy. Chasco Constructors was the general contractor on the project, with BIG RED DOG providing engineering services and Levy Architects handling the building design.
