Texas Music Museum & Office Tower Coming to MLK & Congress

A museum district is taking shape between the Capitol and UT.

Texas Senators passed S.B. 1147 creating the Texas State Music Museum to “preserve, recognize, and celebrate the rich and varied heritage of Texas music and Texas musicians.” In addition, the nonprofit Texas Music Foundation would be established to manage, operate, and fund the museum.

According to the Statesman, the new museum will be located within a previously approved state-owned office building on the southeast corner of Congress and MLK. The 420,000 SF building (seen below in a rendering) is part of the first phase of the Texas Capitol Complex Master Plan. The site is across the street from both the Bullock Texas State History Museum and the Blanton Museum of Art.

In addition to office space for various State departments, the Master Plan envisions the new building to include “a public function at the base” of the building, creating a “significant gateway for visitors to the Capitol Complex.” It will also include a huge underground parking structure (4,800+ spaces) and will convert Congress Avenue into the Texas Mall with landscape and streetscape improvements.

Although the bill establishing the museum and foundation still has to gain the House and Governor’s approval, construction is expected to begin on the first phase sometime this year.
