I-35 Projects On the Way
I-35 commuters, take note: construction on projects in South and North Austin are on the way.
In North Austin, plans for improvements at I-35 and 51st Street should be underway by this fall. The $20.6 million project will include adding a roundabout, realigning the southbound frontage road, and improving bike and pedestrian facilities.
City and TxDOT officials say it should help to reduce bottlenecks at the southbound frontage road of I-35 and 51st Street for east and west-traveling traffic, as well as improve the flow of the southbound ramp between 51st Street and Airport Boulevard. Work is scheduled to wrap up in the winter of 2018/2019.
Meanwhile, dirt has already turned on a project to improve I-35 frontage roads from Stassney Lane to William Cannon Drive. Work will include reconstruction of frontage road bridges over Williamson Creek and bridge structures at Stassney Lane and William Cannon Drive; construction of new U-turns at Stassney and William Cannon; widening of main lanes to incorporate shoulders and extended entrance/exit lanes; reconfiguration of ramps; improved bike and pedestrian facilities; and new safety and high mast lighting.
The primary goal of that $79 million construction is to improve safety and mobility on that stretch of I-35 and its frontage roads. Construction is scheduled to finish in the winter of 2019/2020.
Both of these projects are part of the Mobility35 initiative with the goal of improving mobility on I-35 in the Capital area.
