The Rundown on Austin’s Run-Off Elections

Early voting in Austin’s 10-1 council and mayoral elections has begun, with run-off election day on Dec. 16.

In the mayor’s race, campaigning has gone into high gear, with flyers, TV ads and phone calls from candidates Steve Adler and Mike Martinez peppering Austin residents. Both candidates published op-eds in the Austin American-Statesman, with Martinez touting his experience and Adler emphasizing new ideas on transportation, education, and affordability. A recent poll showed Adler with a lead over Martinez.

In the city council run-offs – seven of the districts will see run-off elections – big names are starting to come out in support of some of the candidates. U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett is supporting District 4 candidate Greg Casar, as well as District 8 candidate Ed Sruggs, who also has support from County Judge-elect Sarah Eckhardt. In District 6, U.S. Rep. Ron Paul has endorsed Don Zimmerman.

The race in District 3 is still bitter between brother and sister Sabino “Pio” Renteria and Susana Almanza, who enter the run-off in an almost- dead heat.
